Northcote Pottery
Masterclass
Phil Elson
Saturday 8 October 2011
10am – 3pm
$90.00 incl GST

This workshop is aimed at potters who have had some experience
in glazing and wish to further develop their skills in both the
application of glazes and their understanding of how glazes work.
The workshop will seek to explain in clear terms the role of the
individual materials and how they work to produce a glaze when
combined with other glaze materials. Further it will explore how
colours are attained and how certain faults can occur and be
remedied.
The workshop will also examine the role of the three core
components of a glaze:
- the fluxes (oxides)
- the glaze stiffener (alumina)
- the glass former (silica)
The workshop will involve a ‘hands on’ approach to the
development of a number of glazes from a single base glaze through
the application of Brongniart’s Formula. This workshop will examine
glazes that develop in the Cone 9 -10 range (stoneware and
porcelain temperatures of 1280 – 1300 degrees centigrade) and will
attempt to cover areas such as:
- how is a glaze composed and how do the individual components
interact with each other to cause a glaze to melt?
- how to obtain the specific gravity of a glaze
- what is Brongniart’s formula and how is it used
- safety in the use and application of glaze materials
- line blending a base glaze with a colorant (oxide or
stain)
- line blending 2 glazes to produce a variety of glaze
colours
