Pottery Equipment & Tools

WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC WHEEL? An electric wheel is the most common piece of equipment on which potters form items of pottery. Historically, wheels were kicked with the leg, or rotated with a stick. But nowdays, the majority of wheels are electric. There are many brands of pottery wheels available, and it is important to choose a reputable manufacturer to ensure the continued availability of parts. Most pottery wheels have a life of at least 20 years.

WHAT IS A PUGMILL? A pugmill is used to blend clay to restore it to a more uniform & workable consistency. This applies to new clay & to 'used' clay scraps. Clay is loaded into the feed hopper (opening at the top of the pugmill) and an internal auger (inside the barrel ) pushes the clay along the barrel through fine metal screens before re-compressing the clay and forcing it out the nozzle in a uniform shape. De-airing models incorporate a vaccum pump which removes any air trapped within the clay during pugging. This eliminates the need to wedge / knead the clay.It is therefore preferable that when purchasing a pugmill, you choose a de-airing model.Non de-airing models are also available.

WHAT IS AN EXTRUDER? An extruder is a manual tool which forces moist clay through a die shape to make solid/hollow 'extrusions' of varying length. The simplest extruders make coils of clay of varying lengths to assist in making a coil pot. Potters who throw on an electric wheel find extruders helpful when making lots of consistently shaped handles for mugs & teapots. Sculptors and educators find extruders excellent for creating varied shapes to construct and sculpt with.

WHAT IS A SLAB ROLLER? A slab roller is a simple and effective way of making large areas or numbers of clay slabs. They take the hard work out of rolling, and replace the old fashioned rolling pin and rolling guides. A good slab roller will speed up the production time of potters who make slab plates & tiles, make pottery classroom activities easier & less messy, and ensure a better quality slab.

WHAT IS A BANDING WHEEL? A banding wheel is an excellent studio aid to decorating and forming clay. A good banding wheel is heavy in weight (so it maintains it's momentum when spinning), stable, and of the correct diameter for the job at hand. Fine decorators use a banding wheel for painted 'banding' or the application of line decoration. It can also be used for any other decorating where the decorator wishes to move the form without touching it during decoration.A banding wheel is also useful for handbuilders and sculptors needing to move their work so it can be viewed/worked on from a variety of angles.

WHAT IS A SIEVE USED FOR IN POTTERY? A sieve is essential in the pottery studio to ensure that glazes & glaze ingredients are screened and dispersed to a consistent thickness without any lumps etc. It can also be used to strain casting slip before & after use to remove largish lumps, or remove foreign bodies.

WHY USE A TILE CUTTER? A tile cutter ensures that each tile is of a regular and consistent size, and that the tile edges are not de-formed during cutting. A tile cutter is an excellent way of keeping a large mural/paving project consistent and cohesive through tile size/shape. Tile cutters come in a variety of shapes.

ACCURATE TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT IS ESSENTIAL! So ensure that your thermocouple (the long thing like a thermometer) and pyrometer (the dial/digital readout box) is accurate. This equipment comes is varying types R, K & N. The R type is the most common. Your equipment should have some reference to which type (R/K/N) of gear it is - sometimes the colour of the comp lead between the two pieces of equipment is a good guide too.

ELECTRIC KILNS ARE THE MOST EFFICIENT AND EASY TO USE KILNS.That's why they are more commonly used than gas kilns which require more attention, and preferably an outdoor location. There are many varieties of kiln body, computerized controllers, kiln vent systems and appropriate furniture. It's best to discuss your requirements with our staff to ensure that you choose the most suitable 'package' for your needs.
