BUFF RAKU
Full stoneware
temperature body becoming very dark and highly speckled due to high
content of dark burning trachyte dust as part of the grog content.
Remainder of grog is crushed firebrick. All grog content is minus
16 mesh. Like the Red Raku, the Buff Raku is plastic for throwing
if a grogged clay can be handled. Suitable for addition to
stoneware clays for grog content, texture, speckiness and colour,
suits larger pieces, handbuilding, sculpture and Raku firing. Fires
buff at earthenware temperatures to dark brown at 1300oC.

pale terracotta at 1100oC but containing about 40% grog. Still can
be thrown if the high grog content can be handled. An excellent
strong, forgiving, handbuilding body bisque fire up to

stoneware glazes. Suited for sculptural and large pieces, and for
adding to other clays to increase grog content or darken colour.
Will fire to 1300ºC readily, and accepts staining with oxides
well. Do not apply glaze to Red Raku at stoneware temperatures as
it tends to 'shell off.' Particle Size16#
